Perry Project Interview Gets In-Depth on Creation Process Behind New EP 'Liars, Fires'

August 10, 2023 by Andrew Ellis in Interview

Florida native and now Minnesota-based singer-songwriter Perry Project approaches the craft of songwriting like a painter would an abstract work. The songs he writes are audio canvases where he’s always trying to find a way to express an idea differently than he has before. This seemingly chaotic method of creating leaves room for endless interpretation.

PRESENT COMPANY "TALKING ON COUCHES" ALBUM REVIEW

December 08, 2020 by Andrew Perrizo in Album Review

I’ve been struggling with what I want to say about this record. I want to say something brainy and interesting but simply put, clever quips are unnecessary because “Talking on Couches” is just a great record.

ADMIRAL FOX "NOWHERE IS SAFE" REVIEW

May 08, 2020 by Andrew Perrizo in Album Review

“Nowhere is Safe,” a title that sums up the anxiety and fear most inhabitants of planet Earth are feeling right now, is a darker and grungier turn for the typically more pop-synth rock Admiral Fox. Released in April, the “Nowhere is Safe”’s five tracks seem to swell with anxiety until the penultimate song “Pictures of Drones,” then dial up the cynicism with a cathartic release on “So Proud.” Without knowing it Admiral Fox provided my pandemic experience with a perfect soundtrack.

ALLERGEN "HONESTY HOUR EP" PREVIEW

April 30, 2020 by Andrew Perrizo in Album Review

Garage rock is not generally an avenue for sonic exploration. The rules of the game are simple and straightforward. 1) Be loud 2) Play fast 3) Wear your bleeding heart on your sleeve. Numerous bands dating back to the ‘60s have made their name following these three rules.

OFTENER "DAYDREAM" EP REVIEW

March 31, 2020 by Andrew Perrizo in Album Review

Oftener have their heads in the clouds. Although their pillowy strain of -gaze rock draws inspiration from countless rougher and rawer sounds, this Minneapolis four-piece filters their songs through the internal monologues of a head lain down for bed.

KING BROWN "KING BROWN EP" REVIEW

March 16, 2020 by Andrew Perrizo in Album Review

Ostensibly named after a deadly Australian Outback snake, Minneapolis two-piece King Brown loose a fevered hunger with the unhinged attack to match. In the vein of many notable blues based duos, Alex Ashmun pulls double duty, singing and riffing over drummer Aaron Esnough's propulsion.

GOWNS "THE HOLLOWS" ALBUM REVIEW

February 28, 2020 by Andrew Perrizo in Album Review

Reminiscent of the “The” bands of the early 2000s, Gowns’s upcoming EP “The Hollows” achieves a sound that is simultaneously nostalgic and fresh. John Bair’s crooning vocals immediately stand out over the often echo affected guitar from Evan Willie and Eric Wagner, the tight but groovy drums of Zach Reiff, and the grounding tones of bassist Brian Wagner.
