Top songs on the Minnesota Sound Playlist.

Mae Simpson "Stuck Behind the Blues"
Mae Simpson and her seven piece band have garnered an impressive amount of success over the last few years blending several genres including blues, country, soul, jazz, rock and more. The groups latest single “Stuck Behind the Blues” provides a soulful vocal performance, big brass stabs, funky guitar strumming and a tight drum kit. The song captures the genre blending essence of the band perfectly.

Stay at Home Astronaut "Coconut Bay"
Stay at Home Astronaut delivers crunchy electric guitars and a breakneck speed drum groove in their most recent track “Coconut Bay.” The incredibly clean production on this song does wonders and helps control the chaos as the tune descends into a psychedelic soundscape with abstract sounds swirling about. The raw energy on “Coconut Bay” is palpable. If ever there were a track to get you excited about getting back to seeing live music, this is the one.

Ka Lia Universe "Outta My Head"
“Outta My Head” is a sassy breakup song from singer/rapper Ka Lia Universe. A relaxed instrumental sets the tone for Ka Lia’s nonchalant confidence on the track. Lyrics like “I should have never f***ed you” are paired with a slew of insults and digs like “imma leave your ass on read.” It’s a satisfying combo of relatable remorse and infectious confidence.

Eslicky "Frenz"
Melancholy pop sensibilities abound on this track. The beat is catchy and satisfying, featuring a lo-fi drum loop and a smooth guitar solo on the latter half of the track. As a bonus, Eslicky is an amazing vocalist. Like, for real he has a really really nice voice. The only bummer about this track is that it’s the only one Eslicky has released so far. We need more!

DeTrell Melodies "Hometown"
“Hometown” is a nostalgic ballad about change. DeTrell reminisces on growing up and friends leaving town, a childhood treehouse being cut down to put up a townhouse etc. The instrumental is subtle, a single guitar line interspersed with piano and a quiet synth pad. The track ends with a gospel choir singing “stand up for your hometown.” This track will have you singing along and waving your lighter back and forth in the air.

The Only "Ain't Got Nothin' to Lose"
The Only is an indie rock band with an incredible bassist. Their new track “Ain’t Got Nothin’ to Lose” will make that abundantly clear in the first few seconds of the song. A funky groove during the verse gives way to a heavier rock and roll feel on the chorus. Riki Olson (vocals/bass) screams out “I ain’t got nothin’ to lose my baby!” The band works together really well and gives off a great modern rock and roll vibe. To hear more check out the bands 2019 LP “Chawsk.”
