KATY VERNON "HOME" MUSIC VIDEO PREMIERE
In Katy Vernon’s new music video for “Home,” her daughter uses stop motion and a doll and it’s house to tell a short story of settling into a house and making it a home. The doll unpacks boxes and sets up furniture, makes some tea, and bakes a cake, before finally putting its feet up and enjoying its new home. The stop motion is crafty as rooms fill up and rugs unroll, setting everything in its place. The video develops another layer of depth when you learn that it’s not just some random dollhouse, but Katy’s from when she was young, and that her mother had made some of the tiny furnishings herself, meaning that three generations of her family had a hand in making this video. There are personal details and neat touches all over the video such as a hint of Katy’s country of origin with the UK flag on the roof of the car in the beginning. The song and visuals contrast in an interesting way, Katy sings about feeling like a tourist and not being as connected to a place she used to call home, while the doll in the video is getting comfortable, settling into its home. “Home” is an emotional song and a clever video that reveals new details each time it’s re-watched.
“I was born and raised in London but have now lived in MN for longer than I lived in the UK. The song was inspired by having a sense of homesickness for a place that is no longer your home.
The video was conceived and directed by my daughter Lily.
She filmed it using my childhood dollhouse that I brought over from the UK. Some of the furnishings, like the welcome mat etc were handmade by my mother. Lily never met her granma and this makes it a very sweet and meaningful connection.” - Katy Vernon
