COMP KEYZ FEATURING FINDING NOVYON "CARHARTT FIT" MUSIC VIDEO
Packed with enough local signifiers to fill the storefront of a kitsch shop in Minneapolis’s NE (pronounced Northeast, not Nordeast, as some gentrifying marketing firm may unconvincingly try to fool) Comp Keyz’ new single, “Carhartt Fit,” and its accompanying video plant a flag firmly in the North Star State. Over a beat so woozy you might mistake it for having finished off a growler from a favorite local brewer, Comp rasps poetic about the explosiveness of the local hip hop scene. This hometown pride turns outward as the duo looks to elevate themselves and their peers to a greater platform. Highlighting the prowess residing within this scene, Finding Novyon is tapped for a fiery guest feature. Novyon, who has been rapping up a storm for several years now, stakes a claim as one of the better rappers out there right now with a verse that shows his adeptness as he both spits on top of and then slides alongside the beat.
“Carhartt’s” video is unmistakably shot in an unfinished basement not unlike any number of those found in the Twin Cities. By maintaining a veneer of stoney-faced focus, the duo subtly let slip the fact that how and where they work, play, and live is all the same - staunchly Minnesotan. Ultimately, the song’s lyrical ambition and its low scale visual accompaniment balance a line between self-serious boastfulness and playful humility. Although Comp Keyz’ “Carhartt Fit” may not single handedly turn Minneapolis into a national hip hop powerhouse, it serves as a sample of some of the effortlessly enjoyable art coming from the area right now.
"Fresh off of our production credit on Kemba's EP "The World is Watching" we are back with an original song featuring Finding Novyon (our 4th collab with him). We think the Minnesota music scene is ready to blow, and we want nothing but success for all the artists from here. In the first verse I touch on my desire to see people recognize the talented folks here, and I think that recognition is coming very soon." - Comp Keyz
