Visually captivating, the loose narrative of the video for “Castles” cuts between the band performing on stage, and a raw and emotionally acted performance from Nathan Barlow. Barlow nearly steals the show as he breaks past literal and figurative barriers to reach the venue where GOWNS are performing. The instrumentals feel effortless, with an aloof and natural coolness, while the vocals croons their way through “Castles.” The song has a lot more depth than I gleamed the first several times I listened, and I’ll let GOWNS explain below.

“Castles was written reflecting on the terrorism set upon Muslim Karen and Rohingya villages by the fascist administration of Myanmar. It incorporates themes of innocence lost to arbitrary violence and neglected childhood needs . The song was recorded in Minneapolis after Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd, and the songs lyrics adapted to incorporate the formative moments GOWNS experienced following this injustice. In “Castles” music video, GOWNS’ close friend and collaborator Nathan Barlow crafted an abstract narrative using his experiences as a black man growing up in Minneapolis, as well as working with and around Minneapolis Police Department.” - GOWNS
