DEATHDANCE "LAST GASP" VIDEO PREMIERE
Juxtaposing the beauty of fresh flowers with the eventual dried husk that’s left, DEATHDANCE’s video for “Last Gasp” is gloomy and brutal, but also defiant. The imagery is bleak, cutting between Augustus Watkins of DEATHDANCE being crucified while insolently singing the lyrics, and spray of flowers in various stages of decay. The music builds and so does the pace of the editing until it’s ultimately a strobe of pain and defiance, and death and vivacity. The editing of the video is spot on, pulling you in close for the softer-spoken lyrics, making it personal, then pulling you out wide for the industrially-bassy chorus creating a feeling of tension and anxiety. The entire video is gorgeous in its darkness, check it out below.
“The song and the video are about different forms of inner strength, especially for people at the losing end of a power struggle.
For the video, we wanted to create a character who represents inner strength and even dignity while facing something unbeatable. We chose a simulated crucifixion because torture represents the ultimate power differential.
Lyrically, this song was a total surprise. When I went to the studio to demo lyrics for "Last Gasp," I didn't know what I wanted to sing about, except to follow the themes KPT had outlined when we started this EP: waking nightmares, fallen kings, and rebirth through fire. It's unusual for me to go to the studio that unprepared, so when I stepped to the microphone and began singing, I surprised myself at the acrimony, indignation, and pain that came out. We used the very first take I did — words I began singing before I knew what they meant." - Augustus Watkins, DEATHDANCE
