Folk Punks Reunite!

On March 4, 2023, a vast majority of the Minneapolis folk punk scene gathered at the Underground Music Cafe for an event called Folk Punks Re-Unite.  I’ve been away from Minneapolis for school, but I’m so glad to be here for this. On my first day back in town, I got to catch a ton of my music friends in the folk-punk scene all in one place–at the Underground Music Venue in downtown Minneapolis. This was a night to remember, with 18 acts and 6 hours of music.

Nur-D turns First Avenue into the inclusive Club Nur-D

Whether he just wanted people to dance, addressed his social justice activism work against police brutality, or slowed it down for a love song — all eyes were always on Nur-D. They’d follow him anywhere and I’d probably find my feet walking with as well. This kind of artist doesn’t come along often, especially a homegrown one.

KYM & Dark Bunny - "Not 4 U" EP Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday, July 18th, I attended KYM’s “Better Late than Never” show celebrating the second year anniversary of the “Not 4 U” EP. With the hopes of an EP release show in 2020 being dashed by Covid - Kim Schneider (vocals and guitar) did not give up on sharing and celebrating her hard work. “Thanks for waiting two years with me!” Kim called out to the fully packed room of friends, family, and fans at Icehouse. Kim was joined onstage by Drew D’lakes (bass), Riley Jacobson (drums), Alia Jeraj (vocals), and Dierdre McQuillan (vocals). “March 2020 I released an EP and think, “I'm gonna hold a big EP show!” and here we are two years later.” This celebration was, without a doubt, worth the wait. KYM was supported that evening by Foe and Dark Bunny.

Art-a-Whirl 2022

On the last Sunday of May, I was able to catch a friend of mine, Alyse Carbonell, play on the Q.arma (pronounced karma) stage in Northeast Minneapolis before playing a set with my own band, Foe, on the same stage. Art-a-Whirl is a three day extravaganza celebrating art, creation, and local businesses in Northeast Minneapolis. Events are hosted at countless venues, drawing thousands of people who are interested in local music, visual art, food, and drinks - to name a few. The weather cooperated brilliantly, giving us beautiful weather over the weekend, allowing participants to enjoy exploring the event, trying out food from local food trucks, and sipping on beers and iced coffees comfortably.

Heart To Gold, Early Eyes, and Dad Bod Concert Review

This past Friday night, a sold-out crowd packed into the Underground Music Venue to celebrate the release of Tom, the new album from rockers Heart To Gold which is, for the record, the best local album of the year as of yet. With them was an incredibly stacked bill of support from Early Eyes, Dad Bod, Gramma, and Paqrat. This cathartic affair felt monumental, building off of the energy of the bands and the crowd throughout the night. Singer and guitarist Grant Whiteoak echoed this sentiment early in Heart To Gold’s set, telling us all "I'm so fucking nervous, this is psycho."
