FreshVS Sellers' "Fresh Beats" Review

May 17, 2021 by Paul Thorson in Album Review

The Mill City Collective seems to have an early harvest this year. Before the ground was even thawed the Minneapolis-based group had the soundwaves heating up. Reed Benjamin’s “RXB” in late February produced the first crop of ripe fruit. A month and a change later, FreshVs Sellers pulled the roots out of the ground giving us some Fresh Beats.

KILOFRAX "TRAVELING" REVIEW

April 29, 2021 by Eric Martin in Album Review

Traveling truly feels like a trailblazer in both native sampling and creative instrumentation. The duo’s incorporation of vocal melodies, intimate recordings, and unique rhythm patterns makes the project feel both curated and sequential when listened to in its entirety. Clocking in at five tracks totaling 15 minutes in length, the personalities behind the EP, Ash Wood and Miles Irwin, leave no room for filler as they swiftly bend the sounds of our world to create their own.

HAEEAH "NUMBERS" EP REVIEW

April 27, 2021 by Eric Martin in Album Review

Numbers is an artistic expression of Haeeah’s experiences with life, love, emotions, and relationships of all types along her journey thus far. Haeeah’s style is slow and methodic, bouncing back and forth between traditional singing and rapping. She lyrically illustrates a journey from a gray sense of hopelessness into rediscovering her sense of purpose and appreciation for all the wonderful things and people in her life.

Capaciti's "Mannequins" Review

April 09, 2021 by Paul Thorson in Album Review

With more than 3 separate decades in the game, Dave Capaciti is opening the vault and adding another LP to the stack. One-half of the group earlybirds and member of HECATOMBS, Capaciti serves an LP with smooth synthetic bangers while mixing his high octave, gravelly vocal inflection in Mannequins. Being at such a ripe age, you would assume fatigue would set in for the emcee, but it’s the contrary.

WASTE "PRAY FOR NOTHING'' REVIEW

March 30, 2021 by Eric Martin in Album Review

Pray For Nothing clearly captures a moment that is fraught with conflict and distrust. Born from a time and place of massive upheaval and civil unrest, this album is the embodiment of rage that many have felt boiling deep in their souls.

REED BENJAMIN "RXB" REVIEW

March 29, 2021 by Paul Thorson in Album Review

One of the busiest artists in the Twin Cities recently added to his growing number of EPs. Reed Benjamin released “RXB” on February 22. Initially set to drop on Valentine’s day, Reed chose to forgo the February 14th release date in favor of an 8-day delay in order to fine-tune the final mixes and tracklist.

JUSTIN COURTNEY PIERRE "AN ANTHROPOLOGIST ON MARS" EP REVIEW

March 22, 2021 by Eric Martin in Album Review

Justin Courtney Pierre’s new EP, An Anthropologist On Mars, is deep and dynamic. It gives a snapshot of an internal search for meaning and purpose in a seemingly barren wasteland. JCP manages to squeeze a vast progression into a measly 12 minutes. Don’t be fooled by the short timestamp, be prepared to stick this album on repeat!

HENNI ANTOINE ! "GROWING PAINS" ALBUM REVIEW

March 15, 2021 by Eric Martin in Album Review

Growing Pains takes you on a personal journey into the trials and tribulations of henni’s transition from youth to adulthood. Like any good story, the project features a protagonist who has faced a conflict and experienced personal growth. henni’s smooth-sounding melodic vocals serve as a constant throughout the entire project and make it incredibly easy to groove to.

S.X.3H.W.A #4 "Along Came iiickyb0iii"

March 08, 2021 by Paul Thorson in Album Review

Iiickyb0iii assemble a unique sound in this album that I can only describe as “Futuristic Noir Southern-style Trap.” Trunk-rattling bass licks and spasmodic hi-hats coupled with the sinister, but pearlescent synth hits sound like they’re from decades past this. Both g00db0iii and Prizzy Icky each bring a unique voice that compliments the chaotically clean instrumentation.
