Octocopter is an Organ-Powered, Rollicking Blend of Funk, Rock, Jazz Fusion, and Psychedelics

October 05, 2023 by Andrew Perrizo in Album Review, Concert Review, Video Premier

A completely instrumental album and Marshall’s first solo effort, Octocopter might be described as an organ-powered, rollicking blend of funk, rock, jazz fusion, and psychedelics, but then you’d have no idea what it sounds like. Simply put, Octocopter is a display, a demonstration both of Toby Lee Marshall’s mastery of his instrument and of the range and sheer ability of a Harmon organ.

Sloppy Bluesy Shanties: The Del-Viles’ Danceable New EP

September 25, 2023 by Andrew Perrizo in Album Review, Concert Review, Video Premier

The Del-Viles’ latest EP, Daydreamer, condenses rock music down to the essentials - and does so extremely well. Self-described as “skeleton dance lessons from French pirates,” the three-piece garage band’s catchy guitar riffs are infectious, and the gravely vocals bring an edgy twist. As the band’s bassist, Gabs Semansky says, “I like to think of the three of us as some silly guys out at sea dancing along to some bluesy shanties. Sloppy bluesy shanties.”

Minnesota State Fair 2023 Concerts and Music !!!

September 12, 2023 by Dan Michener in Album Review, Concert Review

I’ll admit it: I am not a big Minnesota State Fair enthusiast. I will go, but usually just one day; but it’s hard to beat the music. For Minnesota music lovers, the State Fair offers more than any one person can enjoy. In fact, there were a lot of bands and performers I missed. So this is a brief overview of the people I saw and the music I enjoyed

Everyday is like Sunday: An Evening with Greta Ruth at the 7th Street Entry.

June 26, 2023 by Dan Michener in Album Review, Concert Review

Greta opened the night for Kate Malanphy and to say it was perfect would be an understatement. The right sound, tone, inflection and warmth in Greta’s voice completely lulled the crowd.

New Rocket Union, Silent Treatment, Silverteens and Rich Mattson and the North Stars at Uptown VFW

May 02, 2023 by Dan Michener in Concert Review

It’s kind of hard to top a night like this! It was a really good mix of styles, genres and approaches to music—-but each band is masters of their respective crafts. There is a little something for everyone in a bill like this—-this would be a real rockin’ lineup for the Minneapolis Open Streets Festival along Lyndale Avenue (hint, hint).

Soul Asylum 30th Anniversary MTV Unplugged / Grave Dancer's Union at Minnesota State Theater

April 25, 2023 by Dan Michener in Concert Review

So here’s my Soul Asylum story. In 1988/1989, I was a freshman at Apple Valley High School. Just a few minutes south of Minneapolis/St Paul. One day, I walked into my freshman Art Class. My friend, Susan, ran up to me.

Loki's Folly Album Release Show (with Special Guest Ryan Smith of Soul Asylum), Porcupine and Tragic Hands

April 18, 2023 by Dan Michener in Concert Review

February 26th at the 7th Street Entry was the album release show of Loki’s Folly's debut album, “Sisu.” A trio-powerhouse of siblings: Annie on guitar and vocals channeling Joan Jett of the Runaways, with Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland, giving the band a straight one, two knock out punch. Nissa on drums, who can give any Alex Van Halen a run for their money, and Oskar on bass, keeping the band in line and on task.

5Cent Reality and Whale in the Thames at Aster Cafe

April 14, 2023 by Dan Michener in Concert Review

First off, if you haven’t been to the Aster Cafe, you need to go! Its such a warm place. A bit coffee house, a bit bar, and a fantastic sound. I think every performer I’ve seen there sounds excellent. Plus you get the added views of Minneapolis’ oldest cobblestone street and the Minneapolis skyline
